April Wine Class - France's Rhone Valley

France’s Rhone Valley

The Rhone River Valley produces much of France’s best “bang for the buck” wines.  That doesn’t mean that the region is known only for inexpensive, every day type wine as districts like Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Cote-Rotie, and Hermitage produce some of the country’s most sought after and expensive bottlings. The most popular red wine varietals grown there are Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre with significant plantings of lesser known grapes such as Carignan, Counoise and many others to be found as well.  The white wines of the region are made from a number of varietals with Viognier dominating plantings in the northern areas and a wide variety of grapes being planted in the southern Rhone and Languedoc.  The most popular white varietals for producing full bodied whites are Marsanne, Roussannne and Viognier with Grenache Blanc, Picpoul and Clairette being the most common ones used for production of lighter style whites.

Tonight we’ll introduce you to wines that exemplify the region and the styles of wines that have made the Rhone Valley so popular among wine lovers.

March Class: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is the world's most widely planted grape varietal and also the world's most recognizable red wine.  While is was long suspected, it wasn't until 1996 that a UC Davis scientist, Carole Meredith, proved that Cabernet Sauvignon was indeed the offspring of the two famous varietals Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc.  Come and explore why Cabernet Sauvignon is the king of grapes and why it makes great, drinkable and age worthy wines.

Wines:

  1. Killibinbin - Langhorne Creek, Australia
  2. Terre Noble - Colchagua Valley, Chile
  3.  Braai - Western Cape, South Africa
  4. Lacroix - Bordeaux, France
  5. Seven Falls - Wahluke Slope, Washington State
  6. Sivas-Sonoma - Sonoma, California

Our classes are casual and interactive and led by our resident wine & beer expert Cory Lyerly.  Cory has over 20 years of experience in the wine business as a buyer, consultant and educator. The classes will be held on the 4th Monday of every month and are limited to 10 participants.  The fee is just $10 per person to cover the cost of the wines and pre-payment is required to hold your seat.  Each 1.5 to 2 hour tutored class will start at 7pm and focus on a specific wine related theme and will feature five wines (six for this class for added value), snacks and reading material.
